Webinar: Treatment for Selective Mutism in High School

The Selective Mutism Clinic in Sydney is running a webinar on the Treatment of Selective Mutism in High School on Thursday, 9th May 2024, from 5 pm to 8 pm (Sydney Time).

This 3-hour webinar, targeted at school staff, parents, and educators, aims to provide insights into helping children with Selective Mutism in high school.

Selective Mutism severely restricts a child's ability to communicate verbally outside the home and affects approximately 1 in every 555 children between the ages of 7 and 15. It often coexists with other issues such as depression, social problems, relationship issues, academic anxiety, and generalised anxiety.

While Selective Mutism is a treatable anxiety disorder, it becomes more entrenched and challenging to treat as the child gets older. Treatment typically requires a few years and an intensive program during high school is crucial. The Selective Mutism Clinic collaborates closely with an assigned 'key worker' and support staff at the child's high school to deliver this program.

The webinar will cover various topics including information about Selective Mutism, a graded approach to building communication, factors affecting communication, the role of a 'key worker' in the school, and specific treatment strategies.
